This order give the new guidelines for certification requirement for vessels operating in lndian waters (i.e. for lndian ...posess all certificates including class certificate indicating specific notations, insurance certificates, MLC,SMC, lSPS certificate. Vessels carrying more than 12 persons other than crew, a 'Special Purpose Ship', shall comply with the requirements given below a. vessels constructed after 13th May, 2008 shall fully comply with SPS code, 2008 [MSC Resolution 266(84)]' b. 1. I wish to join Merchant Navy which are various institutes where I can attend the relevant courses.
Ans. There are various maritime training institutes which conducts courses for maritime training for different countries. In India, the maritime training institutes are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. 2. Difference between pre-sea course and post-sea course?
Ans. The pre-sea course is the course required to be done by the candidates aspiring to join the ship whereas the post-sea course which is required to be done after joining the ship.

3. Who can open Maritime Training Institute?

Ans. A registered trust or Section 8 company may open a maritime training institute.

4. What are the different approvals granted of an institute?

Ans. A new institute desiring to conduct maritime course is granted In-principle approval to enable them to prepare the institute for conducting the maritime courses. These institutes once ready to apply for approval of courses. Once institute is approved for conducting a maritime course, it is deemed to be approved by the Directorate General of Shipping.

5. What are the procedures to be followed to open a pre-sea institute?

6. What are the procedures to be followed to open a post-sea institute?

Abs. The guidelines for approval of a post-sea maritime training institutes are given in DGS Order 5 of 2016 dated 01.11.16. You may please following link:- Approval of a post-sea maritime training institutes

7. What are the Basic 5 STCW Courses? Are these courses pre-sea courses or post-sea courses?

1) Personal Survival Techniques; 2) Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting; 3) PSSR; 4) EFA; & 5) STSDSD

8. The 5 Basic STCW Courses are pre-sea courses. Kindly advise what guidelines are to be followed?

Ans. Yes. These are pre-sea courses. However, since these are modular courses of duration 2 to 3 days. Guidelines relating to post-sea courses as given in DGS Order 5 of 2016 are to be followed. .

9. I am interested in joining as a Faculty in a DGS approved maritime institute. What are the guidelines to be followed?
